Ever since pagan times the Svans (Georgian tomb) lived on the southern slope of the Caucasian Chain. Kurdiani was the most powerful and most influential Principality in Svanetia, known as the best fighters.

That was why in 1694 Irakly the Ist, the King of Georgia asked the Kurdianis to provide military assistance following the invasion of Persian Shah. The Kurdianis led by their Principal Artsiva Kurdiani responded to the King’s request and after defeating the enemy a small unit of the family settled in Sagarejo, Kakheti.

The Coat of Arms of the Kurdiani Principality is still preserved and kept in the family.
